Jumping for Joy

I've always liked to jump. That feeling of being airborne, almost flying, for the second or so you are in the air. Weightless. Exhilirated. Alive!

One of my earliest memories of the breath-holding, heart-stopping excitement I was afforded from being airborne was around age two. My dad, lying in bed, would have me sit on his hand while he would raise me up towards the ceiling. A sort of pumping iron, using his young child as a weight.

At infant school (the first school one attends in England, starting age five), each child's birthday was celebrated by them seeking out a bar of chocolate hidden on the top of a cupboard, followed by birthday "bumps" from two teachers. They held me under the arms and bounced me high in the air, so high I thought I would surely take off right through the ceiling. One bump for each year. Six bumps seemed like they would last forever as the whole class chanted along, counting them off.

As a child, I lived for the times I could get on a trampoline. In those days (the late 60s), trampolines were common seaside attractions in British coastal towns. I would beg my parents for the chance to bounce on one, feeling as if I could almost jump out of my own skin, that for a fraction of a second I was on top of the world and had a unique view of everything below. My family couldn't afford to buy a trampoline, but skipping (jump) ropes sufficed, and I would play for hours, chanting the songs, practicing the double jumps, bouncing, bouncing until I could no more.

“Let’s High Band It”

This weekend in Portland I had the pleasure of attending a class taught by Donna Eden and David Feinstein, “The Energies of Love.”  As expected, the class was engaging and helpful, and lots of information was exchanged. But there was a line that caught my attention when Donna was talking about her and David’s own relationship. They have a phrase they use now and then, “let’s high band it”. She went on to explain that to them it means “lets see the glass half full rather than half empty” or “let’s find out what’s right” or “let’s take the high road”.  I like that.

To me, it is a reminder to find ways to rise to the higher vibrations of an experience rather than spiral into negativity or gloom.  Simple to say, but not always easy to do.  I am choosing to keep that mantra close at hand and pull it out when the occasion arises. When mired in a sticky situation, I hope to bring this little phrase to mind and move my energies upward and see the good, take the high road, and find the possibilities.  

I am choosing to "high band it"!

"Quick Fixes" Part III: Crossing Over: Bridging Eden Energy Medicine and Hospice

My intent in publishing the results of my Eden Energy Medicine clinical practicum project is that it may be of help, in whole or in part, to practitioners and other care givers of hospice and other frail or seriously ill people.  I have provided source references throughout and I borrowed from the Eden Energy Medicine Certification Program (EEMCP) 2009-2010 Practitioner’s Sourcebook.  The Therapeutic Protocols section on “Therapeutic Touch:  Guidelines for Working with a Client” recommends additional training in how to touch people safely, respectfully, and effectively and offers some general guidelines.  I would repeat that caution, as there are too many complex issues and considerations to address on that topic here. 

I would much appreciate any feedback or comments on the Protocol tool.  I am also open to future personal communication about the use of the protocol.  And just a note about my hospice credentials:  I have been a hospice nurse for over 20 years and the CHPN refers to my Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse status.

Grounding Our Self

Two members of our Eden Energy Medicine community have become grandmothers recently (congratulations Kelmie and Caroline) and with that in mind I do not know a more grounding experience than watching a new baby with their chosen family for the first time. It is sacred and it is profoundly grounding.

 

Grounding is inherent within our being; just watch a baby. Babies are present, focused, and available. As we age our physical body will continue to grow and adapt to stay in contact with the Earth, but our energies can become ungrounded for a myriad of reasons.

 

This is a vast topic and I feel it an injustice not to expand upon this a bit. I thank you for inviting me to share.

I begin by offering what it feels like to be ungrounded as it registers within my system...It feels disorienting. Scattered. Washed out. Over compensatory. My speech is fast, cluttered. Thoughts are distracted. I become externally detached from emotion, yet what is felt internally runs the gamut of sadness, irritability, panic, withdrawal, and fear. My body feels incredibly disconnected from the rest of my system. Movement is staccato, awkward. I hold my breath unconsciously and what eventually does make its way in is received shallowly. Life is lived reactively in a mechanical, robotic fashion. I am the untethered ship lost at sea during a great upheaval.

A Meridian Tonic - Neurolymphatic Reflex Massage

Awareness: Firmly massaging the Neurolymphatic Reflex points on this chart moves toxins from the meridians they relate to, and the organs the meridians are named for.  As static energy toxins are triggered to release, fresh energy naturally flows in to restore our innate harmonious states of wellness.  This feels like an all-over body tonic to me.

Conjuring the Desired Balanced Energy State: A short-cut

A new client came recently. When I test meridians, I mark them on a five element diagram. That allows me to see patterns clearly, and at the same time it becomes a visual teaching tool that helps me explain the patterns that show up. This woman had a couple of yin meridians and all of her yang meridians out of balance. Triple Warmer was frozen when we started. I prefer to call it “locked” because it helps to understand that the exercises we do for triple warmer are unlocking the energy so it can flow again. I find it to be a useful metaphor.

Just having her hold the triple warmer neurovascular points at each temple shifted that energy, but throughout the session it kept locking up again. We worked with a few other basic energy corrections, including working with the ileoceocal valve, and re-establishing the connections in the control cycle (the star in the five element diagram).

Through this initial process, I learned two things about her energy: it is very responsive, and she has been running a chronic stress pattern.

When she returned for a follow-up visit two weeks later, triple warmer was reversed, as was kidney. Tapping K27 points under the clavicle bone on either side of the sternum, took care of the reversal, and triple warmer stayed in balance, which indicated that she had been following through with the exercises to calm triple warmer, and her triple warmer was therefore less reactive. She also was familiar with me and the setting itself so those were no longer factors triggering a stress response.

However, all of the yang meridians remained out of balance, and many were locked. As I looked at the diagram her situation popped into my mind. “Yang energy,” I suggested, “is good at pushing through. It’s an energy of making things happen. Do you feel that is the stance you have been in of late.”

Earth Energies Rising (part 2): The Dance of Life

It feels to me that there are some very fundamental shifts occurring in the collective consciousness of our modern societies, and also in the Earth. Whether or not you give any weight to the predictions of so many of the indigenous cultures (that we are entering a time of extreme change, the death of one way of being and the creation of a new, more inspired and enlightened global human society), it is hard to ignore the fact that our world is shifting. When we look at the challenges we face, an out-moded economic situation based on a flawed premise of continued growth and expansion, the immense value placed on status and material goods, a disease-care medical model rather than a healthcare medical model, changes in our climate, an Earth scarred by perceived human need, threatened mass extinction of hundreds of species of our animal brothers and sisters as well as our plant and tree brothers and sisters…well, enough…I could go on of course, but these are all aspects of life we are familiar with. In fact, not only familiar with, but often overwhelmed and exhausted by simply trying to get our heads around how we can help facilitate the shifts needed to truly heal and bring back to balance all of these dysfunctional aspects of modern life.

Inspiration's Window - The Crown Pull

Awareness:  I think, work at the computer, read, plan, imagine, analyze, ruminate ... and all of these things bring energy up to my head.  Doing the Crown Pull opens the exit for static clutter that can build up in the head from mental activity, making room for the light of fresh inspiration to pour in.

Practice:  I curl my fingertips and rest them on my forehead, along the midline.  I like to rest my fingertips for a few moments, envisioning light shining from my fingers all the way into the inner structures, and then press in and pull firmly apart to the temples.  I like to breathe in when pressing, and exhale while pulling apart and widening.  I continue pouring rays of light from my fingertips, and the breathing rhythm, pressing in, and pulling apart, following the midline of the head over the scalp, portion by portion, until reaching my neck.  I rake my fingers from beside my neck vertebrae outwards, then let them hang on my shoulders, letting any tension stored there melt away.  Then I release and relax my hands and arms.

Keeping it Simple

In Eden Energy Medicine (among other kindred modalities) we learn a repertoire of very specific processes intended to address specific issues. For some common energy imbalances, such as over-energized triple warmer, we learn more than one intervention that can help re-balance that energy. We could call this process reductionist, albeit more holistic than most allopathic medicine. Yet we sometimes forget, or fail to focus on, a few basic premises.

First, although talking about different energy systems simplifies things and helps us better understand how each operates, there is less emphasis during the certification program on how these various systems interrelate.

Second, when we learn how, for example, to strengthen the aura or to calm Triple Warmer, we have not emphasized that this is not introducing new information to the body. Rather, we are finding ways to get ourselves out of the way so the body can return to its normal state of equilibrium – a state with which the body is already not only familiar, but expert. That may, in fact, be why, for the most part, we cannot cause harm with energy medicine interventions, even though, at times, we can have a potent and beneficial impact on the body’s ability to heal itself.
