lotus blossoms will flutter to the ground.

This poem was written by a client of mine, and arose from some insights she had from the Eden Energy Medicine work we have been doing together. It reminded me of how important it is to be meeting a client’s energy, rather than simply rolling out techniques as they were taught to me. This means being able to step into, or at the very least, understand a client’s sensory type and how that may impact the way I effectively work with them.

Making Our Own Lifestyle Medicine

Energy medicine can come to us in many forms. I had a weekend class with Ellen Meredith in New York City called Energy Fluency. One of the things she spoke about was lifestyle medicine and it has changed my view of how accessible energy medicine can be for people. One of the things I have always loved about energy medicine is how accessible it is for people and now I see that from an even broader perspective.

 During our class we all brought in household objects and put them in the center of the room. Ellen tested one of the students and her hook-up tested weak, meaning her Central and Governing meridians were not hooking up. The student then looked at all the objects and picked up a wooden giraffe. She held it right over her belly button and closed her eyes taking a few deep breaths. Ellen retested her and she was hooked-up!

"Quick Fixes" Part II: Crossing Over: Bridging Eden Energy Medicine and Hospice

Being a health care provider during an economic meltdown is challenging.  I find myself more torn between being present to each of my patients’ situations for whatever time is needed to help during a crisis and being mindful of the needs of my other patients. My employer’s expectation is that I complete increased numbers of visits within an 8-hour timeframe no matter what the complexity!  So my focus for my Energy Medicine Clinical Practicum was on developing quickie-balancing interventions with measurable results. 

I developed an Eden Energy Medicine protocol that addresses pain and distress in frail or elderly clients.  My next Making Eden Energy My Own blog posts will relay the process of integrating Energy Medicine into my hospice practice using the 20 minute protocol I developed and will include some of my findings.  This post will address some preliminary steps.  I will share the protocol contents in upcoming posts.

Vibrant Communications: Cross-Lateral Patterning and Neurological Organizing

Awareness:  Our vitality suffers when information is not crossing from the right hemisphere of the brain to the left side of the body and vice versa. Communication among energy systems can become cacophonous when neurological signals are scrambled (disturbance that can be restored by doing Donna Eden's Wayne Cook exercise).  Scrambled signals and energies struggling to crossover the body are often the result of ongoing daily stress responses.  Restoring the crossover patterns and neurological organization clears communication between energy systems, and helps us access our vast potential for self-healing and renewal.

Laurel Camden (Eden Energy Medicine Certification Program Faculty member and Advanced Practitioner) teaches a way to re-establish the crossover patterns of the body by tracing sideways figure 8s on the face around the eyes. I find that the following adaptation of that exercise tends to provide the benefits of both the Homolateral Correction and the Wayne Cook exercise that are part of Donna Eden's Daily Energy Routine.  This works well for me, and many I work with, and if it doesn't help enough I try other methods to invite balance.

More on Teaching T'ai Chi along with Eden Energy Medicine

I was very excited to see that Yvonne was also combining energy medicine with teaching t'ai chi. I started out to send her a comment appreciating her excellent article about how adding Eden Energy Medicine enhanced her t'ai chi class. Before I knew it, my comment had grown in length until it became a blog post of its own.

When a new student joins my T'ai Chi class, I can tell the moment that the person has gotten "lost." I interrupt the class wherever we are in the form at that point, and explain that the energy has become scrambled. I love the permission watching Donna teach has given me. Because I'm so kinesthetic, I pick up discombobulated energy right away. Initially I would feel defensive and try to plow through despite the challenges, but over time I've learned that being kinesthetic - very sensitive to energy - is a way that I get important information as to what I need to address for the class. I then have the whole class do the standing form of the Wayne Cook posture (known as Tibetan Prayer Pose) together. Some of my students refer to the first step of the Wayne Cook seated and Tibetan Prayer Pose standing postures, as 'pretzeling.'  The postures restore crossing energy, polarization, and grounding. The second step activates the connection between governor and central meridians, which helps move energy out of the head and so is both grounding and balancing. And the third step, known as the crown pull, opens the crown so energy can flow. Sometimes I remind people that opening the crown allows in the spiritual energy that supports us. When that energy is blocked we tend to believe we have to do everything ourselves.

I emphasize that scrambled energy is very contagious. I do this by testing several people in the class with kinesiology. A simple test is to have the person move their eyes from left to right, as if they were reading. If the test is weak, the person's energy is scrambled. I try to remember not to say "You are scrambled" but instead to say "Your energy is scrambled." I want people to understand what is going on is an easily rectified energetic phenomenon, not a part of their identity. I also link getting scrambled to a focus on getting the form right.  I encourage students to adopt an attitude of curiosity and enjoyment. I discourage them from practicing between classes. Instead I suggest that they use the opportunity to trust that their bodies can learn the form. I give them some simple moves that they can practice between classes that will make mastering the structure of the form easier. I think this takes some of the pressure off those who are habitually concerned with getting things right.

The Least I Can Do

In my energy medicine practice I begin by asking, "What is the least I can do?" 

My intent:  to hold space for transformation in deep harmony with the authentic core of a person's being.

Recognizing that healing is a completely personal evolutionary experience that thrives in good company, I show up and choose to be present as witness and ally.

Noticing When We Don't Feel Energy Shift

I had the wonderful luck and privilege to be able to attend Donna Eden's 5 Day Introduction to Energy Medicine class in Cardiff, Wales as a Teaching Assistant (TA).  It was an amazing and inspiring event - over 300 class attendees, and about 25 teaching assistants. This was the largest 5 Day Class that Donna has taught, and when that many people are together working on their energies, it is powerful, and intense.  Class attendees were hungry for ways to feel more alive, joyous, energetic and balanced, and with that hunger they brought an openness and enthusiasm that was inspiring.

One of the key teachings for the class is the Daily Energy Routine (DER). Over the course of her 25 year practice, Donna identified 7-10 exercises which most effectively balance and strengthen the energy systems for most people.  The exercises, collectively known as the Daily Energy Routine, are taught individually throughout the class, and over the course of the class you learn them as a routine. 

Most of the attendees were feeling wonderful as the course progressed.  But a number were not feeling so good.  When this happens it can be a confusing time - there's been an investment of money, time and energy to get to this class, where you are supposed to be learning how to feel better, but you don't feel better, and perhaps even feel worse!  What's up with this energy medicine stuff anyway?

As part of my role as a TA,  I was able to work with some of the people who weren't feeling well. The universe has a way of connecting us with people who can help us, and by no random coincidence, people that I connected with were showing up with vulnerabilities in the systems that I have had to work with more than others to keep balanced.  As I worked with them, it gave me a chance to gather a little bit of data regarding a theory of mine.   If there isn't a shift in energy in how one is feeling when doing an exercises in the DER, noticing that can be important information about underlying energetic vulnerabilities.   It can be a good indicator when energy systems need a different approach, or a perhaps a little kick-start, before the exercises as generally taught, will have the intended impact. 

Keeping Our Wellsprings Bubbling

A couple of years ago I was a participant in a group hiking trip to central Oregon that included a hike to the headwaters of the Metolius River. The headwaters were impressive to me as the river seemed to appear in full majesty out of nothing. Upon closer examination and upon reading about it and hearing from knowledgeable hikers, I was fascinated to learn that this powerful river starts from what looks like “nothing” but a bubbling of water coming out of the ground, a wellspring. Actually there are 2 springs about 300 feet apart that gush forth 50,000 gallons of water per minute and thus create this 29 mile flowing river. I was truly amazed and still wonder at the sight of it.

Swimming the Aura

Donna Eden gave me this exercise at Class 4 of the Eden Energy Medicine Certification Program, in January 2007. It reattached my aura, where the Celtic Weave exercise had been ineffective. It has given me a way to create a more tangible substance to my aura, so there is something to work with when I do the Celtic Weave, aura fluffing, Tibetan rings, figure 8s, hearts, diamonds, and more. It feels almost like whipped cream, rather than what had been thin air. I think my aura was so thin and detached, that doing the Celtic Weave exercise by itself ended up making it thinner, by cutting through it instead of weaving it. I had done lots of Celtic weaving and aura fluffing for about three years before Donna gave me this exercise, but they did not correct my aura. This exercise worked instantly for me. 

 People have asked me to show and/or describe Swimming the Aura. In person, I simply demonstrate it (it is very simple); in writing, it sounds more complicated than it is.  I am offering my written description of this exercise, the way I have learned it and the way it has helped me, since that is what I know. As with most things energetic, what works for me may or may not work for you. I hope that you will try it if it appeals, adapt it if that appeals, or skip it altogether if it doesn’t speak to you.
