On a recent trip, I went to visit a 6-month old little girl, whose parents had gotten in touch with me to ask for help with figuring out what is going on with her. By virtue of the medical detective work and interventions I had done with my own daughter, I am often asked to coach parents of children with all kinds of special needs. In this case, the girl’s Mom suspected her baby may have suffered hypoxia at birth. Barely a few days old, she had been put through a series of intense interventions, including a tracheotomy, G-tube, anti-seizure medications, Phenobarbital, several courses of antibiotics and so on. I had reviewed her entire medical file and it was clear that in addition to whatever may have happened at birth, there was also some type of mitochondrial dysfunction going on. One of her organic acids, involved in several important metabolic processes, was particularly low, several of the key organic acid ratios were off and her lipid metabolism seemed affected. I had prepared to talk to her Mom what other types of testing to discuss with their doctors, share referrals to specialists, therapy ideas, etc. and felt quite comfortable in what I could offer there. I had also spent a fair amount of time thinking about what I could pull out of my (still relatively limited) Eden Energy Medicine toolkit to help this little girl, but had come up with only general guesses about working with a few meridians that I suspected may be involved in what she was going through. Since I hadn’t seen her yet, I had no understanding of her energy state or even whether I would be able to assess it in any meaningful way. I had also never worked with anyone so young, so I didn’t feel confident I could offer much help in what seemed like a very complicated case.

I am on my tenth straight hour of being on the phone and I am starting to wonder if my ears will survive the remaining ten minutes of this call or if they are bound to fall off right now. I am also pondering whether there is a sister disorder to TMJ that may befall my jaws any minute. Still, I find some comfort in the fact that 1. I am not a teacher, so this needn't be my life and 2. I can, at least theoretically, control my schedule, so days like this are the exception rather than the norm. As I wrap up this last call, it crosses my mind that a friend had asked me last week to write about what I do to clear my mind and re-inhabit my whole body on a daily basis. Now seems to be the perfect time to explore this topic.
Frankly, after ten hours of being on the phone, what I really want to do is lie down for a few minutes. However, since very few workplaces have adopted the nap pods, I usually reach into my Eden Energy Medicine toolbox for a few simple, quick techniques to re-balance and re-ground myself. Here are some of my favorites for when I feel too stuck in my head, disconnected from my body or otherwise overwhelmed by what life is offering me in that particular moment:

“Resist,” I ask my daughter, as I try to pull her right arm from the side of her body. We’re in the middle of the cookie aisle at Whole Foods and her left arm is clutching a package of graham crackers, free of gluten, dairy, eggs, soy and whatever else goes in a regular cookie. I can’t really remember what that would be anymore, since we’ve been living in the world of food allergies and sensitivities or “-free,” as I call it, for the past three years. One faithful April day in 2008, it turned out that the very things Kalina loved to eat the most were not only making her sick, but also profoundly affecting her development. She was four at the time and still had very few words, no imaginative play, couldn’t get potty trained no matter what we tried and had a strange left eye turn-in that would come and go. Once we got rid of all the food substances she was reacting to and began introducing some supplements, she went from two to five-word sentences, started playing with her dolls, the eye turn was history and she potty trained herself virtually overnight.

Yes, we are 10 minutes early and that’s perfect! Not so much because it’s highly unusual for me these days to make it anywhere on time (let alone early), but mostly because I really need those few extra minutes to attempt to help my adorable, but neurologically disorganized 7-year old prior to the assessment she is about to have.
The lobby of the Summerfield Suites greets us with a trio of bursting fragrant white rose bushes, as we announce ourselves to the concierge, who calls our evaluator to tell her we have arrived. I head straight to the comfy sitting area in front of the big fireplace. It’s not quite like the desert oasis in Phoenix, where I had just spent five glorious days in my first Eden Energy Medicine class. What a joyful, powerful experience, bonding with 45 other students and our talented faculty and basking in our shared intention to heal and be healed! Five days, fourteen meridians, 27 alarm and nearly a hundred neurolymphatic points later (plus enough early morning pool dancing and late night bar hanging out to last me a month), I had made friends not just with fellow students and teachers, but also with my internal healer. And this is precisely who I hope to summon in the next few minutes. I head over to the comfy sofas arranged around the fireplace with Kalina. As I pull out the Class 1 manual from my purse, close my eyes and start rubbing my hands together to get my energies moving. My daughter is standing by, unsure of what exactly is going on.
